Google Is Finally Showing Businesses How They Appear in AI Search. Here's What to Check Now.

Google's new Search Console reporting gives businesses a clearer view into visibility across AI Overviews and AI Mode. For contractors and service businesses, it's time to start measuring a part of search that was previously much harder to see.

    The Edge in 30 Seconds

    The Shift

Google has rolled out a dedicated Generative AI Performance report in Search Console that shows website impressions across supported generative-AI Search experiences, including AI Overviews and AI Mode.

    The Risk / Opportunity

Businesses can begin identifying which pages are earning visibility inside AI-powered search, even when the customer's search journey doesn't look like the traditional list of blue links.

    The Move

Open Search Console. Review your Generative AI Performance report. Identify which pages are already earning impressions, then use those signals to improve the usefulness, authority and coverage of the content surrounding your highest-value services.

    What Google Actually Changed

For years, local businesses have understood the basic search playbook. Rank well. Show up in the map results. Earn reviews. Create useful content. Get the click.

AI is changing that journey. A homeowner looking for an electrician may ask Google which type of panel is appropriate before contacting anyone. A property manager might compare HVAC maintenance options. Someone considering a med spa treatment may ask a series of questions before ever visiting a provider's website. A homeowner planning a roof replacement might ask Google what materials work best in a coastal climate, what questions to ask a contractor and what affects the cost.

Increasingly, Google can answer parts of those questions directly through AI Overviews and AI Mode. Until recently, one of the frustrating parts for businesses was measurement. Was your content actually appearing inside those AI experiences? Google is now giving website owners a much clearer answer.

On August 31, Google rolled out its Generative AI Performance reporting for Search Console worldwide. The report shows impressions generated when links to your site appear within supported generative-AI experiences on Google Search. Currently, that includes AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Businesses can look at how generative-AI impressions change over time, identify pages receiving the most or least visibility and analyze dimensions such as device and country.

That's important because AI search is no longer a small side experiment. Google says AI Overviews now reaches more than 2.5 billion monthly active users, while AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users. For a local or service business, the practical question is becoming less "Does AI search matter yet?" and more "Where does our business fit into this new discovery journey?"

    Why AI Search Visibility Matters

Imagine someone searching: "Why does my breaker keep tripping when I use my hot tub?" That's not necessarily a request for an electrician yet. It's a problem. But that problem can evolve.

The person may next ask: Is this dangerous? Then: Do I need a dedicated circuit? Then: Who installs hot tub electrical circuits near me?

The same journey happens in other industries. An HVAC customer moves from "Why isn't my house cooling evenly?" to "Do I need ductwork repaired or a new system?" A homeowner moves from "How long does a shingle roof last in Florida?" to "How do I choose a roofing contractor?" A prospective med spa client may move from education to comparison to consultation.

Google's AI Mode is specifically designed to support deeper questions and follow-ups. Google says it can break questions into subtopics and search across multiple sources before producing a response with links to explore further.

That changes what visibility can mean. A business doesn't necessarily have to enter the journey only when the customer types "[service] near me." Useful expertise can potentially introduce that business earlier.

What the New Reporting Tells You

The Generative AI Performance report gives businesses something they've badly needed: visibility into visibility.

You can use it to examine:

    • AI impressions over time — Are more people encountering links to your website through Google's generative-AI experiences?
    • Pages earning AI visibility — Which articles, guides, FAQs or service pages are appearing?
    • Pages receiving little or no visibility — Where might content be thin, unclear, poorly structured or simply not relevant to the questions users are asking?
    • Device and geographic dimensions — Where are those impressions occurring?

But don't turn this into another vanity metric. An AI impression isn't automatically a lead. And more impressions aren't automatically better. The question is whether the right pages are becoming visible around the right problems for the right potential customers.

    The AI Visibility Signal

    01

    Impression

    Was our content surfaced?

    02

    Page

    Which content earned visibility?

    03

    Intent

What problem does that page solve?

    04

    Business Value

Could that problem lead to a valuable customer relationship?

Don't optimize for AI impressions alone. Optimize for useful visibility.

What Service Businesses Should Check First

Don't begin by rewriting your entire website for AI. Start with the evidence. Open the new report and look for your strongest pages.

Maybe it's an article explaining why a circuit breaker trips. Maybe it's an HVAC troubleshooting guide. Maybe it's a roofing insurance resource. Maybe it's a page explaining a cosmetic treatment. Maybe it's a pricing or process guide for a professional service.

    Then ask:

    • Why might Google find this page useful?
    • Does it answer a specific question clearly?
    • Does it demonstrate real expertise?
    • Does it explain something better than competing pages?
    • Does it provide context rather than simply pitching a service?
    • Does it make the next step obvious?

Those are far more useful questions than: "How do we trick AI into mentioning us?"

Don't Turn This Into AI SEO Theater

Every major change in search creates a wave of shortcuts. This one will be no different. Businesses will be told they need hundreds of AI-generated pages. They'll be sold secret prompts. They'll be encouraged to publish thin FAQ libraries filled with slightly different versions of the same question.

That's the wrong lesson. Google has been increasingly building AI Search around links, original sources and useful web content. Recent Search updates have also emphasized helping users discover original and high-quality sources.

Publishing more words isn't the objective. Becoming a more useful source is.

    The Visionary Edge Take

AI search doesn't eliminate local SEO. It expands the surface area where good local businesses can be discovered.

The companies with an advantage won't necessarily be the ones producing the most content. They'll be the businesses that understand their customers' questions, publish genuinely useful answers, build real-world trust and measure where that expertise is earning visibility.

And now, Google has given businesses another window into that process.

The goal isn't to rank everywhere. It's to become visible where your expertise can actually help someone make a better decision.

    Five Actions to Take Now

    1Do this now

Open the Generative AI Performance report

Look inside Search Console and establish your baseline. Google notes that some properties may not see the report if they haven't accumulated sufficient generative-AI impressions.

    2Do this next

    Identify your highest-visibility pages

Don't immediately change them. First determine what they're doing well. Understanding why a page is already earning AI visibility tells you far more than guessing what might work.

    3Build this next

    Compare visibility with business value

A page earning AI impressions around a high-value customer problem may deserve more attention than one attracting broad but irrelevant interest. Prioritize the visibility that connects to real business outcomes.

    4Then strengthen it

    Strengthen the surrounding topic

Build genuinely useful supporting resources, FAQs and internal links where gaps exist. Don't manufacture dozens of pages simply to increase volume. Depth around a real customer problem beats shallow breadth every time.

    5Then measure

Add AI visibility to your monthly marketing review

Track it alongside leads, conversions, organic traffic, Google Business Profile performance and other meaningful business outcomes. AI visibility should become another signal. Not the entire scoreboard.

    What We're Watching

The bigger story isn't simply whether AI Overviews grow. It's whether the traditional search journey continues evolving into a conversation.

Google has already connected AI Overviews more closely with AI Mode so users can move from an initial AI-generated answer into follow-up questions without restarting their search. That could make customer discovery increasingly nonlinear.

Someone may not search: problem → contractor. They may move: problem → explanation → comparison → follow-up → local options → reputation check → business.

For service businesses, that makes expertise, trust and visibility increasingly interconnected. We'll be watching how Google expands its reporting, whether businesses gain more granular insight into the queries driving AI visibility and how AI-powered search changes the path from question to customer.

See where opportunities may be slipping through the cracks.
